さて、

Ａ：「２時から５時までは３時間。」 Ｂ：「２日から５日までは４日間。」

　この違いをどう説明するかということでした。ＡとＢの違いは、次のＣとＤの違いと同じになります。

Ｃ：地面に線を引いた。２ｍの所から５ｍの所までは３ｍ。

Ｄ：旗を並べて立てた。２本目の旗から５本目の旗までは４本。

ＡとＣは、時間や長さという連続量をはかるものであり、ＢとＤは、日数や本数という分離量をかぞえるもの、という説明が妥当だと思うのですが、「連続量」「分離量」という言い方は人口にそれほど膾炙していません。連続量のことを「量」と言い、分離量は「数」と言うことの方が多いかもしれません。

分離量とは、「単位量」にあたるものが自然に個物として分離していて、自然数として数値化できるもので、連続量とは、「単位量」を人為的に設定する必要があり、数値化するときに分数や小数が必要になるものですが、その区別は相対的なものです。例えば、みかんも、１個２個と数えるときは分離量ですが、房に分けて、「三分の一の蜜柑」とか言うこともできるわけで、連続量としても捉えられます。
